West Michigan Wedding Weather: What to Expect in Every Season

West Michigan Wedding Weather: What to Expect in Every Season

If there’s one question we get asked early in the planning process, it’s this: “When is the best time of year to get married in West Michigan?”

The answer isn’t as simple as picking the month with the nicest weather. Every season in West Michigan has its own personality. Summer brings beach days and golden sunsets over Lake Michigan. Fall delivers some of the most beautiful colors you’ll find anywhere in the Midwest. Spring feels fresh and romantic, while winter weddings can be incredibly intimate and memorable.

The best season for your wedding depends on the experience you want to create for yourselves and your guests.

After planning weddings throughout West Michigan, we’ve learned that every season can be beautiful when you lean into what makes it special.

Spring Weddings in West Michigan

March through May

Spring weddings are for couples who love fresh beginnings. By April and May, gardens start coming back to life, trees begin filling in, and everything feels a little lighter after a long Michigan winter. If you’re drawn to soft florals, pastel color palettes, and outdoor ceremonies surrounded by blooms, spring may be your season.

That said, West Michigan springs can keep you on your toes. We’ve seen gorgeous 70-degree May afternoons and rainy weekends that required a quick pivot indoors. The weather can change quickly, which is why we always recommend choosing a venue with a strong backup plan if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony.

One of the biggest perks of a spring wedding is that you’ll often find more venue availability than during peak summer and fall dates.

Our Favorite Spring Wedding Venues

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: The gardens are especially beautiful as everything begins to bloom.

Venue3Two: A historic property with beautiful indoor and outdoor options.

Spring Planning Tip

If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, don’t stress about the possibility of rain. Build a solid backup plan from the beginning, and you’ll be able to enjoy the day no matter what the forecast decides to do.

Summer Weddings in West Michigan

June through August

There’s a reason summer is wedding season in West Michigan. Long days, warm evenings, waterfront views, and some of the most beautiful sunsets in the country make it easy to see why couples flock to the lakeshore.

June is often our favorite summer month. Everything is green, flowers are blooming, and temperatures are usually comfortable. July and August bring warmer weather and more opportunities for beach ceremonies, waterfront cocktail hours, and outdoor receptions.

The one thing couples sometimes underestimate is how much the lakeshore can influence the weather. A day that feels warm inland can be significantly cooler near Lake Michigan, especially after sunset.

If you’re planning a beach wedding, we always recommend having guests bring a light layer for the evening.

Our Favorite Summer Wedding Venues

Ivy House: One of the most sought-after venues near Saugatuck, with beautiful grounds and excellent indoor backup spaces.

Port 393: A modern venue that’s ideal for couples who want a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

Summer Planning Tip

When creating your timeline, don’t underestimate how beautiful golden hour can be along the lakeshore. Setting aside even twenty minutes for sunset portraits is always worth it.

Fall Weddings in West Michigan

September through November

If we had to pick a favorite wedding season, fall would probably win. September is one of West Michigan’s best-kept secrets. The weather is often warm enough for outdoor ceremonies, the summer crowds begin to thin out, and the light is absolutely beautiful.

October brings everything people love about Michigan. Crisp air, colorful trees, and the kind of scenery that makes your photographer’s job easy. We’ve planned October weddings where guests spent the entire evening outside around fire pits, and we’ve also seen couples dancing indoors while leaves fell outside the windows. Both were equally beautiful.

November starts to feel a little cozier. While outdoor ceremonies become less predictable, it’s a wonderful time for couples who love candlelight, richer color palettes, and intimate celebrations.

Our Favorite Fall Wedding Venues

The Cheney Place: Historic charm, exposed brick, and a warm atmosphere that feels especially inviting in the fall.

The Broadway Avenue: A beautiful venue that works well as temperatures begin to cool.

Fall Planning Tip

If peak fall color is important to you, remember that Michigan foliage changes from year to year. Early to mid-October is often a sweet spot, but Mother Nature always gets the final say.

Winter Weddings in West Michigan

December through February

Winter weddings aren’t for every couple, but they’re some of the most memorable celebrations we plan. There’s something incredibly romantic about gathering your favorite people together on a snowy day. Guests naturally settle in, receptions feel cozy, and candlelit spaces become even more magical.

Winter also offers some practical benefits. Many venues have greater availability, and couples often have more flexibility when choosing dates and vendors. Of course, winter weather requires a little extra planning. We encourage couples to consider travel time for guests and leave plenty of room in the schedule if snow is in the forecast.

The payoff can be worth it. Some of our favorite wedding photos have been taken during a quiet snowfall.

Our Favorite Winter Wedding Venues

CityFlatsHotel: Ballroom ideal for couples who want an elegant downtown celebration.

The Harris Building: Classic architecture and beautiful indoor spaces make this a wonderful cold-weather option.

Winter Planning Tip

If you’re planning a winter wedding, build extra time into your schedule. A relaxed timeline makes the day far more enjoyable for everyone, especially if the weather becomes a factor.
