A planner’s take on Michigan’s four seasons, month-by-month.
If you’ve lived in Michigan for any amount of time, you already know the weather likes to keep us guessing. We can have sunshine and 70 degrees one day and pull our winter coats back out the next. It’s part of the charm, right? So when couples ask us, “What’s the best month to get married in Michigan?” our answer is usually: it depends on what you want your wedding day to feel like.
Do you picture cocktail hour outside on a warm summer evening? Are you dreaming about peak fall color? Would you happily risk a little snow for a cozy candlelit celebration? Every season in Michigan brings something completely different to the table.
And while we can’t promise what Mother Nature will do on your wedding day (if only wedding planners had that kind of power), we can help you know what to expect.
Here’s our month-by-month guide to getting married in Michigan.
January: Cozy, Quiet & Underrated
January weddings don’t get nearly enough love. Yes, it’s cold. Yes, there could be snow. But if you’re leaning into an indoor celebration anyway, January can be such a beautiful time to get married. Think candlelight, rich colors, black-tie attire, fireplaces, greenery and maybe even a fresh blanket of snow outside. It’s also outside of Michigan’s busiest wedding season, which can mean more flexibility with certain vendors and dates.
Perfect for: Cozy indoor weddings, black-tie celebrations and couples who genuinely love winter.
Keep in mind: Snow and ice can make travel unpredictable, especially for out-of-town guests. Build a little extra breathing room into your plans.
February: Romantic Without Trying Too Hard
February naturally lends itself to a romantic wedding, but it doesn’t have to mean red roses and Valentine’s Day everything. We love this month for intimate celebrations with lots of candlelight, beautiful food and a slightly moodier design. Michigan will still very much be in winter mode, so plan for an indoor wedding and consider any snow outside a very pretty bonus.
Perfect for: Intimate weddings, romantic dinner-party vibes and rich, layered design.
Keep in mind: The same winter travel considerations from January still apply.
March: The Wild Card
We’re not going to lie to you: March can be a little unpredictable. You might get a gorgeous sunny day. You might get snow. You might get rain. You might somehow get all three. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get married in March! It just means your plans shouldn’t rely heavily on being outdoors. Choose a space you love just as much inside and consider outdoor photos a bonus rather than a requirement.
Perfect for: Couples who want an off-season date and aren’t attached to a particular type of weather.
Keep in mind: Have a solid indoor plan. Not a Plan B you secretly hate, a plan you’d actually be happy to use.
April: Spring Is Finally Showing Up
By April, we’re all very ready for spring in Michigan. You’ll start seeing greenery and those first signs that winter is finally behind us, which makes April weddings feel fresh and hopeful. Spring florals also feel especially appropriate this time of year. The catch? Rain. April is another month when we recommend planning your wedding so that it works beautifully whether you’re inside or out.
Perfect for: Spring colors, garden-inspired florals and couples who don’t mind embracing a little unpredictability.
Keep in mind: Umbrellas are never a bad idea.
May: One of Our Favorites
Now we’re getting into prime Michigan wedding territory. Everything starts turning green, flowers are blooming and temperatures are generally much more comfortable for outdoor ceremonies and photos. You get that beautiful spring feeling without being quite as deep into the heat and humidity of summer. There’s a reason May dates are popular.
Perfect for: Garden weddings, outdoor ceremonies, spring florals and couples who want comfortable temperatures.
Keep in mind: Popular Saturdays can go quickly, so don’t wait too long to book your key vendors.
June: Hello, Michigan Summer
June is one of those months when Michigan really shows off. The days are long, everything is lush and green, and you can take full advantage of outdoor spaces. It’s also a great time of year if you want a later ceremony followed by golden-hour portraits and an outdoor cocktail hour. June is firmly in wedding season, though, so expect competition for popular dates and vendors.
Perfect for: Outdoor weddings, tented receptions, lake-inspired celebrations and long summer evenings.
Keep in mind: Start thinking about heat, shade and guest comfort, particularly later in the month.
July: Peak Summer
If your dream wedding includes sunshine, water and a warm summer night, July is hard to beat. It’s also Michigan, so July can mean hot and humid. If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, little details like shade, water stations and the ceremony start time suddenly become very important. This is also vacation season in Michigan, particularly around Lake Michigan and other popular summer destinations, so give guests plenty of notice if they’ll need accommodations.
Perfect for: Lake weddings, destination weekends and couples who want a true summer celebration.
Keep in mind: Heat, humidity and summer travel crowds.
August: Summer, But Make It a Little Softer
August still gives you everything we love about a Michigan summer: warm evenings, beautiful greenery and plenty of opportunities to be outside. It can still be hot, especially earlier in the month, but toward the end of August you sometimes start getting those evenings that almost feel like fall is on its way. It’s a great choice for couples who want a summer wedding without necessarily choosing a holiday weekend or the height of June wedding season.
Perfect for: Outdoor ceremonies, waterfront celebrations and late-summer color palettes.
Keep in mind: Don’t count on cooler weather just because September is around the corner. August can absolutely bring the heat.
September: The Sweet Spot
If you asked us to choose one of the most universally appealing months for a Michigan wedding, September would be high on the list. You still have plenty of summer greenery, but temperatures can start becoming more comfortable. Earlier sunsets also mean you don’t have to disappear from your reception at 9 p.m. just to catch golden hour. And by later in the month, you may start seeing the very first hints of fall.
Perfect for: Couples who want the best of summer and fall.
Keep in mind: September is popular for a reason. Book early!
October: Michigan’s Main Character Moment
There is nothing quite like fall in Michigan. If colorful trees, crisp air, warm tones and cozy details are your thing, October is probably already at the top of your list. But there’s one important thing to remember: fall color operates on its own schedule. Peak color can vary depending on where you are in the state and what the weather has been like that year. Don’t choose one specific Saturday expecting the trees to look exactly a certain way. Instead, choose October because you love the season as a whole.
Perfect for: Fall lovers, rich color palettes, outdoor photos and cozy receptions.
Keep in mind: Temperatures can change quickly, particularly later in the month. Heaters and an indoor backup plan are your friends.
November: Moody & Cozy
November is the transition from fall into winter, which makes it a little harder to predict—but also gives you an excuse to go all-in on a cozy celebration. By this point, we wouldn’t plan a wedding that needs to happen outside. Instead, find an indoor space you absolutely love and make the atmosphere the star. Candlelight, great food, warm colors and everyone gathered inside together? We’re into it.
Perfect for: Moody palettes, candlelit receptions and couples who want something outside of peak wedding season.
Keep in mind: The trees may be bare by your wedding date, so don’t choose November expecting traditional fall foliage.
December: Festive Without Being a “Christmas Wedding”
There is something pretty magical about a December wedding in Michigan. Venues and towns may already be decorated, everyone is in the mood to celebrate and you have the perfect excuse for an elegant, cozy party. And no, your wedding doesn’t have to look like Christmas unless you want it to. Winter whites, evergreen, velvet, candlelight, metallics and deeper colors can all feel seasonal without being overtly holiday-themed.
Perfect for: Formal weddings, winter romance and a really great party.
Keep in mind: Holiday schedules can make travel and vendor availability a little trickier, so communicate dates with your guests early.
So, What Is the Best Month to Get Married in Michigan?
If comfortable weather and outdoor time are your priorities, we’d look at May, June and September. If you’re dreaming about a true Michigan summer wedding, July and August are hard to beat. If fall color is non-negotiable, October is your month. And if you’d rather have a cozy indoor celebration where weather isn’t calling the shots, a winter wedding can be incredibly beautiful.
